Like many, I grew up a voracious reader – but work, life, and yes, the internet have conspired to ruin my literary mind. So this year I’m trying to rekindle my passion for the printed word by reading one book per month. While a pretty modest goal, it’s still more than I’ve been reading over the past few years, and I’m happy to report that it’s been going well! Here’s what I’ve read this year, along with a micro-review worthy of Twitter:
The Shallows by Nicholas Carr
Simultaneously frightening and illuminating, Nicholas Carr brings brain science to the masses and inspires a call to action: get off the internet and live again – if only for awhile.
The Art of Toy Story 3 by Charles Solomon
A look into the making of an animated feature from the story and visual development point of view. An intriguing glimpse into the Pixar process through beautiful art.
Radical by David Platt
This call to live a radical Christian life is compelling, but repetitious. The best part was the last chapter, “The Radical Experiment,” which is summarized on this official website.
End the Fed by Ron Paul
Congressman Paul’s manifesto for ending the Federal Reserve system is compelling, but a bit long and lacking in raw data. Still worth a read, but The Revolution is better.
The Making of the Empire Strikes Back by J. W. Rinzler (in-progress)
This exhaustive tome is inspirational, meticulously detailing every aspect of the creation of a masterpiece. It’s essential for Star Wars fans, lovers of cinema, and filmmakers of all kinds.
One minor footnote: I read both The Shallows and Radical on my nook – and while I still prefer the printed page, for some books, digital may be the way to go.

I'm an assistant editor at Pixar. My thoughts are something like faith and film run through a flux capacitor.
